Course Modules
The course consists of six modules that progressively introduce networking concepts, technologies and practical problem-solving skills.
1. Introduction to Computer Networking
This module introduces computer networking and explains how connected devices exchange information. Students will explore network purposes, common network types, network topologies and the role of networking in homes, businesses and other organisations.
2. Network Devices and Transmission Media
This module examines the hardware and communication media used in computer networks. Students will explore routers, switches, access points, network interfaces, cables, fibre-optic connections and wireless transmission.
3. Network Models and Communication Protocols
This module introduces network communication models and protocols. Students will explore the OSI and TCP/IP models, common networking protocols, encapsulation and how devices exchange data across networks.
4. IP Addressing and Network Configuration
This module introduces IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, subnet concepts, gateways, DNS and DHCP. Students will explore how network settings support communication between devices and services.
5. Wireless Networking and Network Security
This module explores wireless network technologies, connectivity considerations and essential network protection measures. Students will examine authentication, encryption, secure configurations and common network security risks.
6. Network Troubleshooting and Maintenance
This module develops an understanding of systematic network troubleshooting. Students will explore connectivity problems, diagnostic tools, performance checks, documentation and routine maintenance practices.
