Database Management
Develop practical knowledge of databases, data organisation, SQL, database design, security and the management of information systems.
About This Course
The Database Management course introduces the principles and technologies used to organise, store, manage and retrieve digital information. Students will explore database concepts, relational databases, database design, SQL, data integrity, security and basic database administration.
The course develops practical knowledge needed to understand how databases support websites, applications, businesses and information systems. Students will also learn how well-designed databases help organisations manage and use information effectively.

Course Modules
The course consists of six modules that progressively develop knowledge of database design, management, querying and security.
1. Introduction to Database Management
This module introduces database management and explains how organisations use databases to store and manage information. Students will explore database concepts, database systems, data types and common database applications.
2. Relational Database Concepts
This module introduces relational databases and the structures used to organise information. Students will explore tables, records, fields, primary keys, foreign keys and relationships between data.
3. Database Design and Normalisation
This module examines the principles of effective database design. Students will explore entities, attributes, relationships, database diagrams and normalisation techniques used to reduce duplication and improve data integrity.
4. SQL and Database Operations
This module introduces SQL and its role in interacting with relational databases. Students will explore queries, filtering, sorting, inserting, updating and deleting data, as well as basic aggregation and reporting.
5. Database Security and Data Integrity
This module introduces database security principles and methods for protecting stored information. Students will explore access control, permissions, authentication, data integrity and safe handling of sensitive information.
6. Database Administration and Maintenance
This module introduces essential database administration and maintenance practices. Students will explore backups, recovery, performance considerations, monitoring, updates and responsible database management.
